SANDPOINT — There are relatively few cruises, elaborate cocktails and white-sand beaches in the retirement years of Terry Sumner.

The Westport, New Zealand, resident prefers a hard day’s peddling  through the globe’s many intriguing nooks and crannies, meeting new people and seeing new sights. The 68-year-old retired teacher rode his bike into Sandpoint at the end of August, where he enjoyed a day catching up with his old friend Raffat Saied.

“The world’s a very interesting place, you know,” Sumner said, taking a moment to relax in Saied’s house that afternoon over an omelet and toast. “Just look at a map and take your pick.”
