SANDPOINT — A Washington state man was ordered Friday to serve up to a year in prison for attempting to arrange a sexual encounter with an underage girl in Bonner County.

Edward Nicholas Bursiel said he was ashamed of his conduct and was taking responsibility for it by pleading guilty. But he urged against incarceration.

“I don’t think it would be beneficial to put me in jail,” Bursiel said.

Bursiel, a 46-year-old from Spokane, placed online classified ad in April seeking sexual encounters with any woman regardless of age. A Bonner County sheriff’s detective responded to the ad while posing as a 14-year-old girl.

Bursiel was arrested while traveling to Sagle to meet with the supposed teen. He was charged with enticing a child over the Internet and harmful dissemination of hazardous materials to a minor.
