A much-deserved thanks for Northland

| September 21, 2014 7:00 AM

A much-deserved thank you goes out to Northland Cable from Panhandle Special Needs. Their national contest for cities to nominate their “Hometown Hero” was a huge success, and as a volunteer for Panhandle Special Needs, I was proud to chosen as a nominee for Sandpoint.

We received hundreds of votes from the community that always support PSNI, and won the popular vote, but became ineligible when it was discovered that I reside in Laclede, which was not in a “designated” zip code. My volunteer work has always been in Sandpoint, so it was assumed that I would be eligible in that regard. After being notified that we had won, and I was the “Hometown Hero” , a few hours later I was “regretfully informed” that I was not in fact eligible. What a disappointment for all of us at Panhandle Special Needs and for me personally.

But, to their credit and to our gratitude, Northland Cable came through, and without being required to do so, donated $250 to PSNI and another $250 to me as a nominee, which of course, I donated to PSNI. So, we want to express our deep gratitude to this company for their generosity, which would not have been necessary.

Our deepest gratitude also goes out to all the wonderful people in this community that voted, and that always come through to support Panhandle Special Needs, the facility that serves persons with disabilities in Sandpoint and surrounding communities..

Congratulations to Julie Walkington for all her work with cancer patients and their families, a valiant and important cause. So, Julie, enjoy your recognition as our “Hometown Hero,” and honor well deserved.
