SANDPOINT — A passer-by is credited with saving the lives of nine people who were unaware their Cedar Street home was burning on Tuesday morning.

“They were sound asleep,” Selkirk Fire, Rescue & EMS Chief Ron Stocking said of the home’s occupants.

The passer-by was driving by the home and saw that a fire had taken hold in the attic. The person pounded on the home’s door to awaken its occupants so they could safely exit, Stocking said.

Stocking was grateful for the intervention and regrets not catching the person’s name.

“I would definitely recognize them for their actions,” he said.
