Ponderay mulling ban on 'aggressive panhandling'

PONDERAY — The City Council voted Monday to consider an addition to city ordinance to prohibit aggressive panhandling.

The catalyst for the new regulation came from Councilman Rick Larkin, who told council members he had seen Facebook posts complaining of a known Ponderay woman claiming to be homeless and pregnant who was “stopping cars, begging for money.” Her story, he said, was inconsistent.

Larkin also felt there had been an increase in panhandlers with “no money, no job, need food,” signs around the Ponderay business district.

He didn’t say if the panhandling he described involved any physical contact.
