Local shooting needs to be reexamined
It is with a heavy heart that I write this. This Easter morning I read an article in a national publication about my hometown, accompanied by a disturbingly graphic video. Last summer a mentally ill pregnant woman was shot dead by Sandpoint police, and I am appalled. I am angry, I am sad, I am disgusted, and most of all, I am confused.
As The Guardian notes: “This Native American woman’s death barely ruffled a feather in this tight knit conservative Idahoan community.” Not 50 miles away a dog was fatally wounded by a police officer, and for some reason that not only got more media attention but sparked a community uproar.
