Baldree powers Bulldogs to sweep
MOSCOW — Cody Baldree crushed two home runs and drove in six runs, helping lead the Bulldogs to a 16-10 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader sweep over the Bears on Monday in 4A Inland Empire League softball in Moscow.
The Bulldogs (4-5, 3-1 4A IEL) scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to score another come-from-behind win to earn the sweep. Head coach Elizabeth Hawkins praised the timely hitting of Danika Moore, and the defense of Cody Baldree to help Moreland notch her first varsity win.
“She put the ball in play and let the defense do their job. She kept her composure and kept throwing strikes,” said Hawkins. “Cody hit a three-run shot to take the lead in the sixth, and she made some great defensive plays tonight. Danika’s hitting was awesome, she came through in some big spots for us tonight.”
Alison Calvert and Lily Martin each had two hits, and Bri Baldree, Topi Elsfelder and Cody Baldree each drove in two runs, leading the Bulldogs past the Bears 13-9 in the opener.
After falling behind 9-2 early, the Bulldogs erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and Bri Baldree settled in after a pair of early home runs and put up three zeroes to put the game away. The freshman hurler finished with eight strikeouts, as the Bulldogs have now beaten both league opponents and are sitting pretty in the race to host the district tournament.
“It was huge coming back to win in that fourth inning,” said head coach Elizabeth Hawkins. “It was an all-round team effort.”
