Young eager to take game to the college level
SANDPOINT — A strong work ethic, high enthusiasm and overall passion for the game will serve Sandpoint senior Trinity Young well at the next level, as the libero/defensive specialist signed a letter of intent on Monday to play volleyball at Saint Martin’s University.
Young, a back row specialist who brought a lot of energy and a strong serving game to the floor at Sandpoint, was able to visit the campus in Lacy, Washington and also practice with the team.
She said the coaches are excited to have her on the team, and she can’t wait to experience the competition at the collegiate level, playing in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
“I love the game so much, everything about it,” said Young, crediting her many coaches for molding her game. “All these coaches taught me to be confident with myself. I have a lot of passion for sports, and want to do my best.”
Young will be re-united with former Bulldog teammate Hannah Neumann, who saw playing time with Saint Martin’s as a freshman outside hitter.
Sandpoint head coach Erin Roos feels Young is well equipped to play in college, boasting a strong work ethic and desire to get better.
“She’s a kid who’s here on her day off working. They’re super lucky to get her, she’s the ultimate team player, really selfless,” lauded Roos. “She’s determined, reads the ball well and has great ball control. She has that tenacity. She’s not OK with the ball hitting the floor.”
Young plans to study communication, and received more than $17,000 in academic scholarships. Just like at Sandpoint, she’ll likely play libero in college, entrusted with feeding the setter and keeping balls alive from the back row.
“She’s gonna beat some girls out and take their place, I think she’s that good,” said club coach Desi Staples. “She’s a go-getter. She’s tough, enthusiastic, someone I could count on to uplift our team.”
Young wished to thank her many coaches, including Roos, Staples, Jack Dyck, Jamie Poncho and Caroline Watson.
