Five Bulldogs net All-State soccer honors

SANDPOINT — For the first time in many years, the Idaho High School Soccer Coaches Association voted for All-State teams. Five Sandpoint High School Bulldogs were recognized this year in the small schools category, with Ashly Busch and Riley Couch each earning first team honors for the girls, while goalie Kyle Hertel made the first team, and Mahonri Hunsaker and Dawson Mulder the second team for the Bulldog boys.

Ashly made the team for her outstanding leadership and play through the end of the season. Even though Ashly battled with injuries this year, she was still integral to the team when she returned for state. Even though she was still not at 100 percent, her never-say-die attitude was an inspiration to the team.

Riley Couch led the team all year long as the only captain to remain uninjured all season. Whether it was at forward, midfield, or defense, Riley was a leader in her grit and determination to win. Both players have a high soccer intelligence, which is definitely a reason for their nominations as well.

The girls did not have a 2nd team.

Kyle was chosen as the 1st team’s keeper for obvious reasons. He is arguably the best keeper in the state of Idaho. He is big, and he uses that size to command the 18. His soccer intelligence has risen immensely throughout his high school career, and he has used that to become one of the main leaders on his team.

Mahonri was the other captain for the Bulldogs this season. As a center back, he has lots of speed, plenty of aggression, and the determination to win any ball in his area of the field. His teammates responded to that energy this season.

Dawson had a breakout year, coming into his own with his speed and dribbling abilities, not to mention the ability to score important goals, as he did in Districts to draw the game level with Moscow in a win or go home scenario. Dawson was impressive all season in breaking down defenses with slick moves, and as the only Sandpoint junior to be nominated, will be a force to be reckoned with next season as well.
