Shooting still under investigation

SANDPOINT — The officer-involved shooting that claimed the life of a Sandpoint man remains under investigation, according to Kootenai County Prosecutor Barry McHugh.

McHugh said on Friday Kootenai County sheriff's detectives don't have a timeframe for the investigation's expected completion.

Casey George Alarcon was shot by law officers on Aug. 11 at 1016 Ruth Ave. Two Bonner County sheriff's deputies and a Sandpoint Police officer were at the residence to serve an arrest warrant when Alarcon allegedly confronted them with a weapon and fired two gunshots.

A sheriff's deputy fired one gunshot, which killed Alarcon, Kootenai County sheriff's officials have said. The Region 1 Critical Response team is investigating the shooting. The team is made up of law enforcement agencies in the five northern counties, with Kootenai County serving as the lead agency.

The officers involved in the incident were identified as deputies Tyler Jinright and Aaron Walker. Authorities have not disclosed which deputy returned fire. Sandpoint Police Officer Jeremy Inman was also involved in the incident.

Alarcon, 34, was sought for arrest for failure to pay $201 in fines and court fees associated with a 2007 robbery case, according to 1st District Court records. A notice advising Alarcon of the overdue costs was mailed to Alarcon, but the notice was returned to the clerk's office as undeliverable.

Alarcon served a five- to seven-year term for the armed robbery of the Downtown Crossing, a former downtown bar. Alarcon told the court at his sentencing that he had become overwhelmed with maintaining his sobriety, employment and prior court-ordered obligations in the days leading up to the robbery.
