Sundquist, Collado power Bulldogs past Wildcats

SANDPOINT — It was a tale of two halves for the Bulldog boys basketball team, which rallied from a poor first half to down Kellogg 59-44 in a nonleague home opener on Tuesday night at Les Rogers Court.

The Bulldogs (1-2) struggled mightily in the first half, trailing 19-14 going into the locker room and unable to find any kind of rhythm on offense.

Whatever head coach Kent Leiss told the team at halftime seemed to work, as Carlos Collado scored five quick baskets on a variety of low post moves during a third quarter run, giving his team the spark it needed.

Trailing by four to start the fourth quarter, Taran McLaughlin hit a 3-pointer and scored five straight points, giving Sandpoint its first lead of the game and kicking off a 26 point fourth quarter.

Paul Sundquist had a big game for the Bulldogs, making 9 of 9 free throws as part of his 17 points, to go with a team-high eight rebounds. Kyle Perry added six points and three assists despite playing much of the game in foul trouble, and Matthew Curtiss scored four points and nabbed three steals for the Bulldogs, who outscored the Wildcats 26-7 in a pivotal fourth quarter to put the game away.

Tobias Colburn had 12 points on 5 of 7 shooting, while Chase Jerome made 7 of 9 free throws for nine points to lead Kellogg, who had trouble getting stops in the second half.

Sandpoint is at Lake City on Friday.
