Japanese martial arts class offered for adults

| December 24, 2015 6:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Aikido Idaho and Takayama Dojo bring more than 30 years of authentic Japanese martial arts experience to Idaho, and are thrilled to offer an introductory class for adults in Sandpoint starting on Jan. 5.

The Art of Peace (Aikido) is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba as a synthesis of his martial arts studies, philosophy and religious beliefs. Aikido is often translated as “the way of unifying (with) life energy” or as “the way of harmonious spirit.”

Practitioners of Aikido use the practice to defend themselves while also learning to protect their attacker from injury. Aikido techniques consist of entering and turning movements that redirect the momentum of an opponent’s attack, and throw to joint lock that terminates the technique. To fight without fighting and to be at peace with one’s self is the ultimate goal.

The class will run on Tuesdays at 6:15-7:30 p.m., from Jan. 5 through Feb. 9, at Takayama Dojo, located at 521 Cedar St. in Sandpoint (rear entrance of Studio 1). The class fee is $63/person ($4 city discount). Pre-register at Sandpoint Parks and Recreation, 1123 Lake St., by the Dec. 30 deadline to assure your spot in the class.

Looking for more Aikido offerings? Youth and women only Aikido classes are also available. This winter Aikido Idaho will offer a monthly movie night on the mats. Visit Aikido Idaho at www.aikidoidaho.com for more information.
