Council OKs trail concept

SANDPOINT — The City Council approved a non-binding resolution at it’s regular meeting Wednesday supporting the construction of a proposed ridge-hugging recreational trail in the Selkirk Mountains.

The 20- to 25-mile trail, called the Watershed Crest Trail, intended for non-motorized recreational use such hiking, mountain biking, Nordic skiing or snow shoeing, would wrap around the mountain ridges of Little Sand Creek Watershed basin, passing through various public and privately-owned lands along the way.

Much of the WCT trail would run between the 4,000- and 5,800-foot elevation, making it a unique recreational facility, according to councilman Shelby Rognstad, who requested the resolution.

“There are not a lot of trails that maintain that kind of elevation and give you the views,” Rognstad said.
