SANDPOINT — A host of athletes from Sandpoint brought home medals recently from the Idaho Special Olympics Winter Games, with the regional meet being held in Mullan, Idaho.

Lee Hudson and nine year-old Hayley Thompson each placed first in both their cross country skiing events, while Lillian Campbell earned first and second place finishes.

In snowshoeing, Bradey Scrimsher earned first place in the 25 meter and 50 meter events. Michell Couldry earned second place in both the 100 meter and 200 meter events. Robyn Dillworth placed fourth in the 100 meter and first in the 200 meter. Natasha Freeberg burned up the course in the 50 and 100 meter races to earn a first in each, and John Painter shaved 30 seconds off his qualifing time and won the 800 meters.

“It was pouring rain,” said coach Chris Painter. “Despite the weather our team stayed in good spirits and performed fantastic.”

Unfortunately, the Alpine events were canceled, but Brandon Beck and Shaine Parson’s hard work was recognized at the team’s awards dinner.

Team member Tammy Shivel came alone to help out with timing races and cheering on the team.

“Most everyone on the team had improved on their qualifying times and exhibited wonderful team spirit and sportsmanship,” said Painter. “They all had a good time even though we were completely soaked by the end of the races.”

The Sandpoint team now turns its attention to the annual “Penguin Plunge,” a fundraiser at City Beach in Sandpoint on March 21.
