SANDPOINT —  Sixty-five pounds of firefighting gear, a narrow stairwell and 1,311 steps inside a 69-story West Coast skyscraper.

Firefighters aren’t rushing into the building to fight a fire, however, but to battle another, more sinister danger: cancer. They’re doing it one step at a time.

It’s a challenge five Selkirk Fire, Rescue & EMS firefighters will be taking head-on March 8 when they tackle the Columbia Center building, the second tallest building west of the Mississippi River, during the 24th annual Scott Firefighter Stairclimb in Seattle.
