EAST HOPE — Volunteers are being sought to assist with a project to test the effectiveness of a new Asian clam countermeasure in Ellisport Bay.

A University of Idaho research team from the College of Natural Resources is leading the treatment project at Pend Oreille Shores Resort. The project is slated to get under way this weekend, according to Erin Mader, program coordinator for the Idaho Lakes Commission.

Researchers placed impermeable pond liner over infested portions of the bay last year, but they were not entirely effective, Mader said. This time around, they plan on pairing the liners with packets of sodium hydroxide to raise the pH.
