| January 1, 2015 6:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — The one-two punch of junior Madi Schoening and freshman Grace Kirscher once again helped lead Sandpoint to a win, downing Grangeville 44-36 on Wednesday in the final consolation game of the Coeur d’Alene Winter Classic.

Schoening filled the stat sheet with 22 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals, and Kirscher added nine points, five rebounds and three steals, as the Bulldogs (8-6) used a 20-12 fourth quarter run to put things away.

Elani Williams added nine rebounds and three steals and Lily Martin seven boards, and the Bulldogs got some strong play from their bench to win their only game of the tournament. The Bulldogs were active defensively, nabbing a whopping 16 steals as a team.

“I think we played a bit better today,” said Bulldogs head coach Duane Ward. “We turned up the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter that led to steals and got our offense going. It allowed us to benefit with our transition game.”

Sandpoint gets a break in the schedule before hosting Lakeland in the 4A Inland Empire League opener on Jan. 10.

Coppess shoots Bulldogs to OT win

COEUR d’ALENE — Broc Coppess erupted for a season-high 20 points, including some huge points down the stretch, leading the Bulldogs to a 58-57 win over Vallivue on Wednesday in the final consolation game of the Lake City Invitational.

Davan Norris scored 17 points, teaming with Coppess to score the bulk of the points for the Bulldogs (3-8), who broke through for their first win of the three day tournament. Coppess took the game over down the stretch, giving the Bulldogs some momentum heading into the league stretch of the schedule.

“We really bounced back. The first day we didn’t play very well, and the second day we made progress,” said Bulldogs head coach Kent Leiss. “Broc stood out. He scored most of his 20 in the second half, and I think he had all eight points in overtime.”

Sandpoint gets a lengthy respite in the schedule before hosting Timberlake on Jan. 13, the final tuneup before league play.
