Sandpoint players represent Idaho at ODP soccer event
SANDPOINT — Four Sandpoint Strikers players represented the Olympic Development Program for the state of Idaho from Jan. 8-11 in Phoenix, Ariz.
Curtis Hauck, Jezza Hutto, Tyler Moore and Riley Walkington made the trip in a bus from Boise with their new teammates, stayed in hotels like they would with a college or professional team, and measured themselves against the best players from the western region.
While neither group was able to pick up a win, the players believe the experience was a valuable one nonetheless.
“I saw a different skill level in Arizona. The quickness of play was my favorite,” said Moore, who scored two goals for the Boys 2001 ODP team, more than any other player from Idaho in any age group or gender.
Walkington also reflected on the experience positively.
“I saw this as an amazing opportunity for me as a player, a challenge that would help me in becoming a better soccer player and teammate,” said the Strikers midfielder. “The style of play was very fast. It was important to always have your head up looking to switch the ball quickly.”
These players recognize the benefits of their participation, namely exposure to college coaches and a heightened level of competition, and have brought their experiences back to Sandpoint to share with their Strikers teammates.
