SANDPOINT — A Bonner County sheriff’s deputy injured in a collision with a tractor-trailer on Wednesday night remains in critical condition.

Sheriff Daryl Wheeler said Deputy Alex Hughes was under sedation on Thursday at Kootenai Health’s intensive-care unit.

“He’s in rough shape, but he’s going to survive,” said Wheeler.

Idaho State Police said Hughes was southbound on U.S. Highway 95 in Careywood when he executed a U-turn in his patrol sport utility vehicle. While doing so, a southbound tractor-trailer crashed broadside into the side of the Chevrolet Tahoe Hughes was driving.
