Officials urge caution as fire danger heats up

SANDPOINT — Saturday is Independence Day, the Fourth of July, when America ostensibly celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the country’s emancipation from Great Britain.

The celebration typically involves families, campfires, and boats. Toss in some alcohol and a few fireworks and it can be a volatile mix.

But add a dry winter and a dash of unseasonably high temperatures and the dry conditions become a recipe for disaster.

“It’s a good year to practice being careful,” is the way Selkirk Fire Rescue and EMS Lt. Glen Cassidy put it.
