EWU coaches hold volleyball camp

The Eastern Washington University volleyball coaching staff was in Sandpoint this week holding a three-day camp for 49 area 7th through 12th graders.

EWU assistant Matt Dyck had the help of father Jack Dyck, a longtime successful coach in Sandpoint who was an assistant last fall at the University of Arizona, as well as Eagles coaches Michael King and Wade Benson. Clark Fork coach Courtenay Kiebert had seven of her players in attendance, and Bulldog head coach Erin Roos helped run the camp.

She said it helped everyone to hear other volleyball experts explain things in a different way, and to learn new drills.

“They bring a lot of authority. It (the camp) wasn’t sugar-coated, it was exactly what we expected,” said Roos, who enjoyed watching players both new and experienced improve in such a short time. “We saw huge growth. Some of the kids who couldn’t hit well at the beginning were banging it.”

The Eastern Washington team is coming to Sandpoint for a team retreat in August, and will play an exhibition at Kootenai Elementary, tentatively scheduled for Aug. 13.
