Transformer malfunction cuts power

SANDPOINT — A reported transformer malfunction cut power throughout Sandpoint for about three hours on Friday evening.

The outage, which began at about 7 p.m., drew a vigorous response from Selkirk Fire Rescue & EMS and Sandpoint Police to Avista Utilities’ Sandpoint office power station at the corner of Pine Street and Lincoln Avenue.

Police officers reportedly extinguished a blaze at the facility.

Avista spokeswoman Debbie Simock could not be reached for comment and an outgoing message on her phone said she would not be checking her voicemail. Media inquiries were directed to an automated telephone system for Avista customers.

The outage brought a complete standstill to Sandpoint, forcing businesses to close early and authorities to place moveable stop signs at signaled intersections.

James Wood, a resident who has a home that overlooks the power plant,  said he heard a grinding noise, saw a bright light and then smoke.

Describing the sound he heard, Wood said, “I thought somebody was sawing something.”

Power was restored at about 10 p.m.
