Bulldog JV girls cap season with a win

| March 4, 2015 6:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Playing a schedule laden with strong 5A programs from arguably the toughest girls basketball league in the state, the Bulldog JV team posted a record of 2-15, but more than held its own against Moscow and Lakeland in league play, which in the grand scheme of things is what matters most.

The Bulldogs lost to Moscow by 19 in the first meeting, then showed big improvement in a six point loss the second time around. After losing by one point to the Hawks in the first meeting, the Bulldogs avenged the loss and beat them by nine to end the season on a high note.

The team featured plenty of depth, with seven different players leading the Bulldogs in scoring, a great sign moving forward.

“They played amazingly as a team and had great team camaraderie,” said head coach Laura Alamillo, lauding how the team got along. “Our strength was speed and the ability to fast break. The faster the pace, the better intensity and focus the girls had. These girls can run.”

The team was able to practice with the varsity, and provide a great look to help prepare the team for a run at state.

Team members include Zoe Speelmon, Katherine Kaull, Audrey Mattila, Lindsay Guthrie, Cherilyn Darrah, Danika Tomazich, Calli Layborne, Saydee Brass, Shelbee Reif and Paige Dumars.

“Their speed, athleticism and energy will be a force to be reckoned with,” claimed Alamillo. “These girls are mostly freshman and will be a great team to watch as they get older.”

The Bee will publish any coach submissions from JV and J2, as well as middle school sports.
