Limit distractions, be aware of surroundings

| March 5, 2015 6:00 AM

Every moment our children spend with us, they are learning how to become citizens of Sandpoint. We are teaching them how to be attentive or inattentive drivers, as well as safe or thoughtless pedestrians. Both walkers and drivers need to be seen. It is our simple duty to acknowledge and respect one another.

In crosswalk situations at any intersection, whether striped or not, drivers should yield when pedestrians step into the roadway. This is the law, but not all drivers comply. Be smart walkers. Look left, right, and left again before stepping off the curb. It is important to make eye contact with the driver of the vehicle(s) we plan to cross in front of.

However, even though the driver may see us, we cannot assume the vehicle will stop. Winter road conditions may inhibit a driver from being able to stop, weather and lighting (bright or dim) may limit a driver’s ability to see a pedestrian, and a distracted driver may seem to be looking at you but not mentally registering the duty to stop. Wait for the vehicle to stop before crossing.

Likewise, we all need to be smart drivers. Limit your distractions, slow down, drive to conditions, and open your field of view: pay attention to the roadway, intersections, and sidewalks for pedestrians. Proactive citizens are aware and considerate when driving and walking. Our children imitate what they observe. We are responsible for our safety and teaching our children to be responsible for their safety.
