Former Sandpoint resident qualifies for wrestling nationals
SANDPOINT — Jack Hathaway, who attended Forrest Bird Charter School and wrestled for Sandpoint Middle School before moving to Iowa, recently won a championship at the Pac 12 Wrestling Championships, punching his ticket to nationals.
Hathaway, grandson of Del and Wanda Hathaway, formerly of Ponderay and currently of Bonners Ferry, won the 133 pound weight class while wrestling for Oregon State.
Hathaway, a red-shirt freshman majoring in forestry at Oregon State, pinned his first opponent, Jason Delacruz of Cal-Poly, in 1:36, and beat Connor Schram of Stanford by a 4-0 decision in the finals.
This gave Hathaway an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, being held in St. Louis March 19-21. Hathaway goes to the NCAA tournament with a 27-10 record, with 14 pins for the season.
While a prep in Iowa Hathaway won a state title as well as a USAW Junior Nationals Greco-Roman Championship and two Freestyle Championship Runners-up.
