Lovell wins local qualifier for U.S. Open Golf Championship
SANDPOINT — One of the unique aspects of the U.S. Open Golf Championships is that unlike most majors, thousands of golfers from around the world get a chance to qualify for the prestigious golf tournament at 111 sites across the U.S.
One of the golfers trying to advance in a series of local qualifiers is former Bulldog Joey Lovell, who cleared the first hurdle by firing a 69 on Wednesday at a one-day qualifier at Riverton Country Club in Wyoming.
Lovell, who golfed in college at Boise State after playing at Sandpoint, is now an assistant golf pro at Black Bull in Bozeman, Montana. He traveled to Wyoming for the first round of qualifying, and after shooting a 37 on the front nine, turned things around with a 32 on the back, finishing second and grabbing one of the two spots to advance to the sectional round.
