Man jailed in Newport shooting
NEWPORT — An Oldtown man has been jailed for a Wednesday morning shooting in Newport.
At 1 a.m., the Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report that a man had been shot multiple times at a home at 329255 U.S. Highway 2, and that he was being transported by private vehicle to Newport Community Hospital.
Deputies arrived at the hospital and found Newport resident Michael G. Shelly, 34, with multiple gunshots wounds to his back, according to a press release. Shelly identified his assailant as Jacob Oneal, 21, of Oldtown. Witnesses also confirmed Oneal was the shooter, and reported he had fled the area in a black Chevy S-10 Blazer.
