Trio shine at district swim championships
CLARKSTON, Wash. — Sophomore Payton Bokowy continued to dominate the sprint events, winning the 100 and 50 free to remain undefeated on the season while leading the Bulldog girls to a second place finish at the District 1 Swimming Championships on Saturday in Clarkston, Wash.
Bokowy, who will defend her state titles in both sprints this weekend at the state meet in Boise, also teamed with Kate Matlosz, Sierra Speakman and Emily Hieronymus to win the 200 medley relay, as the girls team trailed only state power Coeur d’Alene in the final standings among nine teams competing.
“It was a great meet, the kids swam very well,” said Bulldogs head coach Mike Brosnahan, whose medley relay team won the meet’s first event. “With Emily Hieronymus holding on to the lead all the way to the finish. It was a great race.”
Speakman, just a freshman, had a strong meet by finishing third in the 100 fly and fourth in the 200 free, and could be in contention to place at state as well. Catherine Brenner scored well with a fourth in the 500 free and an eighth in the 200 free, while Matlosz was fifth in the 50 free and sixth in the 100 breast.
Other Bulldog girls notching top 10 finishes included Emma Reed (8th in 200 IM), Hieronymus (8th in 50 free and 500 free), Ellie McCray (8th in 100 free, 10th in 50 free), Hanna Kozlowski (8th in 100 back), Logan Sanborn (10th in 100 fly) and Briana Brosnahan (10th in 100 breast).
Garrett Bamer finished third in the 50 free and sixth in the 100 back, and Seth Bamer third in the 200 free and fifth in the 100 fly to lead the Bulldog boys, who finished sixth among eight in the team scores.
Miles Luce had a breakout meet, finishing fourth in both the 200 IM and 100 free, and teamed with the Bamer brothers and Ben Reich to finish fourth in the 200 medley relay.
Other Bulldog boys notching top 10 finishes included Johnny Parkinson (5th in 500 free), Reich (8th in 200 free), Tristan Johnson (8th in 200 IM, 10th in 100 fly) and Alex Johnson (9th in 100 back).
The girls relay teams also finished fourth in the 200 free and 400 free relays to score some big points, while the boys were eighth in the 200 free relay.
The Idaho State Swimming Championships, an open classification meet, will be held on Friday and Saturday at the YMCA in Boise.
