Timberwolves too much for shorthanded Bulldogs

| November 21, 2015 6:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Madi Schoening posted a double-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds and three steals, but the Bulldogs had a tough time generating any offense in a 52-22 loss to Lake City in nonleague girls basketball Friday night at Les Rogers Court.

Sophomore post Keara Simpson scored a game-high 18 points on 8 of 10 shooting from the field, and Kate Maryon tallied four points, five boards, three steals and two blocks for the Timberwolves, who jumped out to a 19-2 lead and never looked back.

Schoening made 9 of 13 free throw attempts, but without the scoring punch of sophomore Grace Kirscher, who is out sick, the Bulldogs (1-2) struggled to find a rhythm against a strong defensive 5A team with three girls 6-foot-2 or taller.

Danika Tomazich hit a 3-pointer and Riley Couch nabbed three steals in defeat.

“We played with them for a little while. Our problem was we didn’t get our offense going. We didn’t pass, cut or move,” lamented Bulldog head coach Duane Ward. “Riley was all over the place defensively. A lot of young kids played, and they’re a ways away yet. Down the road this will help us.”

Sandpoint is at Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday, where Madi Schoening will be looking to score her 1,000th point.
