PONDERAY — Fiber is the new word for fast, reliable Internet service, and the Lake Pend Oreille School District wants to bring it to its students and staff. The board approved fiber optic bids Sept. 22, during their regular board meeting.

"It's more reliable so we don't have any hiccups down the road," said Erik Olson, instructional technology director for the district. "For North Idaho and where we are, it's going to put us on the map."

The district is looking for bids from area contractors for a dark or lit fiber optic network for transmissions of data, video, voice and other broadband needs. The bid calls for a minimum of 1 gigabit per second of service from each district site to the district office. There are about 13 sites needing the service, said Olson.
