Davis, Hammack power Wampus Cats to win

CLARK FORK — It’s not how you start, but how you finish, and Clark Fork made some key second half adjustments to turn the tide and notch a physical, 24-6 win over Tekoa in White Star League football Friday night in Clark Fork.

Running back Taylor Davis rushed 21 times for 89 yards and also caught four passes for 100 yards, and Tyler Hammack earned 100 yards on 17 carries, as the Wampus Cats (2-0, 2-0 WSL) continue to hang their hat on defense and a power run game.

“We played really, really well. To give up six points in eight man football is a great feat,” said Cats head coach Brian Arthun, praising the schemes of defensive coordinator Nate Guthrie. “It was a nail biter in the first half, and in the second half we kind of took over. We physically decided we were going to run it down their throat, and we got it done.”

Tekoa passed a lot, and Dylan Roper and Bryant Moore had strong games defending the pass. Tekoa took an early 6-0 lead, before Taylor Davis hauled in a 47 yard strike from Wade Stevens to tie the game at 6-6 going into half.

Eich Anderson had a pair of sacks and several hurries, and Spencer Jeffres played tough interior run defense, and the pair also helped pave the way for Davis and Hammack on the ground.

“In the first half we were stymied, weren’t able to run the ball. Second half we made some adjustments, we put it in the offensive line’s hands,” said Arthun. “Tyler Hammack came up really big, they were tough yards in the A gap, he kept on moving the sticks.

Clark Fork will have to heal up quicly, with a game set for Tuesday against Noxon. Kickoff is 6 p.m. in Clark Fork.
