CAREYWOOD — The catastrophic failure of a fifth-wheel recreational vehicle's tire sparked three blazes along U.S. Highway 95 on Wednesday.

There were no injuries and the only property damage involved the RV, which was overrun by fire, said Selkirk Fire Rescue & EMS Chief Ron Stocking.

Stocking said the Washington state motorist was bound for Calgary when one of the RV's tires failed and ignited due to friction. Droplets of molten rubber were then cast off into the brush on the east side of the highway.

Stocking said the motorist was initially unaware the tire caught fire.

“He didn't know it right away and he ended up starting three separate fires,” said Stocking.
