SANDPOINT — The phone rings and area first responders quickly spring into action. There has been a train derailment and crude oil is spilling into Lake Pend Oreille. Boats are sent to City Beach, trailers with equipment are showing up on site, and responders are quickly loading the boats and heading out onto Lake Pend Oreille. Fortunately, that was the scene Tuesday, but for a simulation of a train derailment with hazardous materials spilled.

Boom was deployed on Lake Pend Oreille Tuesday to help first responders prepare for emergency situations. About eight local agencies participated in the exercise drill, the first of its' kind in the area. The drill will continue through Wednesday.
