Sundquist, Edlund swing hot bats in sweep

SANDPOINT — Paul Sundquist continued a torrid stretch at the plate, hammering two triples as the Bulldogs pounded out 15 hits to down Priest River 17-5 in the opener of a nonleague baseball doubleheader Thursday at War Memorial Field.
Sundquist, who drove both doubles deep to right field, scored three runs and remained locked in at the plate.
“He got hot last Saturday, and nine of his last 10 plate appearances have been really good. He's really come into his own,” said Bulldogs head coach Scott Fitchett, also praising his team's defense, which committed just two errors on the day. “We've really hit our stride defensively.”
Second baseman Caleb Edlund had three hits and scored three runs, and along with Sundquist (3B), Davan Norris (SS) and Trey Flint (1B), is part of a strong defensive infield.
Patrick Kummer was sharp on the mound to pick up the win for the Bulldogs (3-5) in the opener, backed by plenty of run support after the Bulldogs plated 11 runs in the first inning.
Nate Pettit and John Campbell each had two hits for the Spartans in defeat.
In the second game, the Spartans jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Bulldogs put up crooked numbers in the first three innings to cruise to an 11-3 lead in a game that was called after the fifth inning.
Sophomore Ted Flint, Talon Dewey and Sundquist each had doubles in the second game, the three forming a dangerous middle of the order. Walker Jacobson came in put up some zeros to pick up the win.
Sandpoint plays Timberlake today, at 4 p.m. at Post Falls High School.
