Spring has sprung and area blooming with arts, fun
SANDPOINT – Spring has sprung in North Idaho and, along with all those daffodils and hyacinth, it’s bird-watching season for those folks who find so much joy in that pursuit. Good timing, too, as we have two such events in store for you.
Be sure to take in the great, live music around town and check out the Oscar-winning film at the Panida, along with a choral music extravaganza just over the border in Spokane.
Thursday, April 7
Open Mic Night
Venue: Monarch Mountain Coffee, 208 N. Fourth Ave., in Sandpoint.

Hosted by talented local songwriter Patrice Webb, this open mic gathering is your chance to share your talent (and hard work) with a supportive and interested audience. Amateurs and newcomers welcome!

Learn About Bird Watching
Venue: East Bonner County Library-Sandpoint Branch, 1407 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.
Time: Noon-1 p.m., Thursday, April 7
Friends of the Library hosts Rich Del Carlo, owner of Peregrine Tree & Landscape, in a fascinating presentation about bird watching in North Idaho. Del Carlo has been interested in birds pretty much his entire life and has been involved in bird field studies with The Nature Conservancy, Point Reyes Bird Observatory, Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge and Evergreen State University. He has also traveled to Europe, Mexico and Costa Rica to watch birds. Working outside everyday affords him great opportunities to see birds in our area, and he is very active in bird conservation.

Big Birds with Brian Baxter
Venue: Heron Community Center, 6 Upriver Drive, in Heron, Mont.
Time: 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, April 9
Come search the lower Clark Fork and Bull River valleys for eagles, hawks, herons, geese, mergansers, owls and other outsized creatures of the sky. This class begins at Heron Community Center with a outdoor class session and then transitions to the field in time for a lot of opportunity to scan the skies and riverside trees for raptors and other king-sized birds. A number of the smaller ones will be on hand for viewing, also.
Brian Baxter is an entertaining and informative teacher, and a day in the field with him will garner many memorable moments. Dress appropriately. Bring lunch, water, snacks, binoculars, camera, a sense of humor and your life list.
