April 12, 1966 — POETRY WINNERS NAMED

The Sandpoint Junior club announced the winners of its annual poetry contest held in the Sandpoint Senior high school recently.

Miss Mary Klatt received first and second place honors. Miss Patricia Carmack, Miss Pat Baugh and Miss Mary Peine received honorable mentions in the local competition.

Newly elected officers of the Junior Club are Mrs. Mike Plaster, president; Mrs. Terry Thompson, vice president; Mrs. Chester Howell, recording secretary; Mrs. George Harper, corresponding secretary.

PETERSON ENLISTED IN SEABEES

Gordon Peterson, Dover, recently enlisted in the U. S. Navy Seabees (construction battalion) as a heavy equipment operator 2nd class and is now attending four weeks of petty officer training in Davisville, R.I.

Peterson is a 1958 graduate of Sandpoint Senior High School and attended the University of Idaho for two years. His wife, Kathleen, and two children, Tracy and Todd, live in Dover.

Apr. 12, 1916 — RESIGNS SCHOOL BOARD

Discord over the re-appointment of a city school teacher led to Mrs. G.S. Helphrey’s resignation at last night’s school board meeting. In tendering her resignation Mrs. Helphrey stated her motive was the betterment of conditions affecting the board. Trouble has been had over school matters lately and internal friction has brought about a decided state of illfeeling on the board. Last night, opinions differed on many things and every old question seemed to revive to add to the discord. The teaching staff for next year was the greatest source of disagreement and considerable heat developed in the various arguments.

CLEAN-UP WEEK IN FULL SWING

Clean-up week is being observed generally throughout the city, property owners and renters as well taking advantage of the community housecleaning period to get rid of a great deal of rubbish piled up on lawns and backyards.

As the city is not furnishing teams to haul off litter from the residential section, citizens must pay for this themselves, but few are refusing to do so and team owners can make nice sums moving the litter. The dumping ground below the Farmin heating plant being used for disposing the rubbish is a large area to be covered. Some enterprising citizens bury rubbish on their own premises but most send their trash to the shores of Sand creek.
