Selkirk School's sets annual spring fundraiser

| April 12, 2016 1:00 AM

Planning is underway for the annual Selkirk School Spring Fundraiser and Live and Silent Auction. This is an event to support the oldest independent, non-profit community school in Sandpoint.

This event is an adults-only fundraiser with a “Great Gatsby” theme. The event will be held on Saturday, April 30, 5-9 p.m. at the Ponderay Events Center. School founders, former students and teachers, families, supporters and the general public are invited to attend.

The dinner will feature delicious appetizers from Bistro at Home, an enticing pasta and tenderloin dinner from Ivanos and a no-host bar. Enjoy live music by Truck Mills and magical entertainment by Star Alexander. There will be fabulous live and silent auction items, and, of course, the specialty dessert auction all presented by auctioneer JoJo Baker.

Selkirk School was established as the North Idaho Learning Center, an accredited independent elementary school formed as a parent/teacher/student cooperative in 1978. It was one of the first schools of its kind in Sandpoint, with a focus on hands-on learning, nature studies, creative arts and outdoor experiences. Academics were combined with outdoor and nature-oriented activities, an approach that was very “avant-garde” at the time.

Hallmarks of its early days, such as small class size and parent participation, are still emphasized today. Hands-on, play-based learning, seasonal celebrations, yoga, dance, music, cooking, gardening and outdoor exploration at the School’s four-acre woodland campus are among the unique offerings for today’s students.

This annual fundraiser offers the opportunity for the school to reach its improvement goals in addition to honoring the support it receives. Specifically this year, school officials said they hope to replace the deteriorating flooring of the school that was installed in 1978.

Cost for the adult-only event is $25 per ticket. Tickets are available at Selkirk School and the night of the event. A limited number of premium sponsorship tables are available, too. Please inquire if interested.
