Group announces quilt exhibit

| April 16, 2016 1:00 AM

The Bosom Buddies quilt group of Sandpoint will hold a one-day quilt exhibit at the Bernd Building — the former location of the Coldwater Creek retail store — at 311 N. First Ave., Sandpoint.

The quilt exhibit will be held on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

There will be a raffle of two quilts made by group members. Tickets will be sold throughout the day and the winning tickets will be drawn at 5:30 p.m. Winners do not need to be present.

There is no charge for attendance but donations will be gratefully accepted.

All proceeds will go toward the purchase of quilting fabrics and the cost of having the finished pieces machine quilted.

This is only the third time since the group’s foundation that members have offered a raffle quilt or proposed any other methods to help fund the process.

The exhibit is a showcase of the talents of group members and will include everything from traditional to modern abstract pieces. It also shows the transition which has occurred in fabric arts and the quilting industry in the lat 20 years.

The group was formed in 2000 by two breast cancer survivors, Linda Aavedal and Verna Mae Davis with the purpose of giving comfort quilts to local patients undergoing chemotherapy treatments.

Bosom Buddies began with four ladies and current has about 25 members who meet monthly to make more quilts.

Many members are breast cancer survivors or another type of cancer.

Over the last 16 years, the group has provided between 275 and 300 quilts to breast cancer patients.

Two years ago, Bosom Buddies members expanded their gifting to include other areas, for example, other devastating medical diseases or other needy causes in Sandpoint and the neighboring areas.

The group meets monthly on the third Monday of each month, 9 a.m. to noon, at First Lutheran Church.

All are invited to stop in and visit with Bosom Buddies members, see what they have done, and how they hope to continue to serve in the future.
