April 24, 1966 — MERGER REJECTED

The Northern Pacific-Great Northern merger was rejected on a close 6-5 vote by the Interstate Commerce Commission Wednesday. The merger would have combined the N.P. and G.N. plus the Burlington and the Spokane, Portland and Seattle railroads into a 25,000-mile system.

This was only the fifth rejection of a merger in a decade that has seen two dozen mergers approved by the NCC.

MARY BARLOW WED IN SEATTLE

Miss Mary Barlow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. S. (Cotton) Barlow of Coeur d’Alene, was married to Kenneth L. Boyd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman L. Boyd, Seattle.

The evening ceremony took place April 15 in the Laurelhurst Presbyterian church in Seattle in the presence of relatives and close friends.

Out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. Barlow, the bride’s brothers and sister, Jim, Bill, Bob, Tom and Christy Barlow and Mrs. Barbara Farmin and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Littlefield of Sandpoint.

April 24, 1916 — COOKING ELECTRICALLY

The Northern Idaho & Montana Power co. is giving a demonstration at Bruce’s grocery store this week of the advantages of cooking on electric ranges. Several types of beautiful ranges are exhibited and the many possibilities in preparing meals by electricity as well as hearing water quickly and cheaply are being shown. Every housekeeper owes it to herself to see an electric range in operation. The use of electricity in all house work is becoming more and more popular as women learn of the cleanliness, cheapness and speed of this means of taking care of the cooking problem.

CHEESE FACTORY AT KOOTENAI

Through T.L. Greer of the Humbird Lumber co. it was learned that Lewis Cone of Reardon, Wn., will erect a cheese factory near Kootenai this spring. Cone recently purchased a 120-acre tract near Kootenai and spoke of his plan to put up a plant as soon as possible. He owns a factory at Reardon and thought this section especially promising in the dairy line.

ABOUT TOWN

Mrs. Earl Farmin, who has charge of the girls’ sewing club of the Methodist church, entertained the mothers of the girls at her home at 605 N. Second avenue Tuesday.

Company A will host their annual Easter dance in the Rink Opera house Monday evening.
