Bulldogs tie Bengals; host Bears today in 4A IEL clash

| April 26, 2016 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — The Bulldogs came oh-so-close to handing the Bengals their first defeat, but could not quote put the tennis dual away, tying Lewiston 6-6 in a nonleague tennis battle between arguably the two best teams in North Idaho on Monday at Lewiston High School.

The Bulldogs led the Bengals in the team score with the No. 1 mixed doubles team of Logan Temple and Allura Livingston finishing the final action of the day, before they ultimately lost in a match that could have easily gone either way.

“It was a war down to the last match,” said Bulldogs head coach Kent Anderson. “The team was up 6-5 with Logan and Allura battling at 5-5 in the second set. They eventually lost and we tied Lewiston once again.”

Anderson said Jake Aguirre and Reilly Wolfe played the match of the day, winning a 10-3 third set tie-breaker on the strength of a strong service game.

“Both teams had super quick hands and solid strokes,” described Anderson. “The difference came down to Jake and Reilly’s penetrating serves.”

April Clark won a huge match at No. 3 girls singles by using very patient and consistent ground strokes, refusing to give away any easy points. Laney Search and Khloe Kyllonen showed why they’re a 4A state title contender, rolling to a straight set win by putting constant pressure on their opponents with crisp strokes and solid volleys.

Sandpoint hosts Moscow today in a big 4A Inland Empire League dual, with each team getting a chance to gauge the other and set their district lineups accordingly. Action starts at 3 p.m. at Travers Park and Lakeview Park.
