Bulldogs shine at JV Regional track meet

SANDPOINT — In a strong showing for the future of the program, the Sandpoint girls and boys both placed second at the JV Regionals for Track and Field recently, with Sandpoint, Moscow, Lakeland, Coeur D’Alene, Lake City, Lewiston and Post Falls all competing in the meet.

In the girls field events, Elaine Huang and Saydee Brass placed 1st and 2nd in the High Jump, both clearing 4’6”. Elaine was also 5th in the Long Jump with a 12’9” jump. Victoria Aylward was also 9th in the Shot Put with a PR throw of 26’2”.

The boys field events went well, with Travis Davis placing first in the Discus (113’ 9”) and second in the Shot Put (35’ 6”). Tyler Connolly was 5th in the Shot (33’ 10”) and Zarren Stoddard was 8th (32’ 9”). Jannik Janisch was 3rd in the Long Jump with a leap of 17’10, followed closely by a 5th place finish for Payton Finney at 17’ 4”. Sam Diercks was 5th in the Pole Vault with a 9’ 6”.

For the sprint events, Jaelyn Martin won the 100 meter dash with a 13.56, Valerie Wickboldt was 3rd with a 13.85, Jazmin Stockton was 5th with a 13.95, and Jenna Matier was 6th with a 13.98. In the 200, Valerie Wickboldt was first in 28.63, Jaelyn Martin 2nd in 28.92, Jenna Matier 3rd in 29.06 and Jazmin Stockton was 4th in 29.13. Heather Yunek placed 3 in the 400 with a 1:09.69. Brooke Davis took first in the 100 hurdles with a 17.49, and Jaelyn Martin was 3rd with an 18.37.

On the boys side, Tyren Witthaus placed 3rd in the 100 with an 11.99, followed closely by Spencer Bassett in 12.03 for 4th, while Tucker Hall was 6th in 12.19 and Robbie Johnson 9th in 12.27. Bassett also won the 200 in 24.48, with Payton Cox finishing 3rd in 24.78. In the 400, Payton Finney was 7th in 57.67 and Hyrum Hunsaker was 8th in 57.78.

The distance races saw Hyrum Hunsaker place 2nd in the 800 with a 2:16.59 and Ephriam Weisz place 3rd in 2:16.90. In the 1,600, Cole Dillon was 5th (5:06.53) with Gabriel Merithew 8th in 5:11.96. Sarah Bourn was 7th in the girls mile in 7:27.09.

That was the last meet for about 30 of the athletes on the Bulldog team as the varsity squad begins the final training stage leading up to Regionals on May 12.
