Lake Pend Oreille School District patrons have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to pass a facilities levy on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2016. This will be the most significant upgrade since the last major facilities levy was passed in 1985 to build Sandpoint High School and the first facilities levy of any kind since 2008. Even when passed, this levy will fund LPOSD at the lowest school facilities tax rate allowed by Idaho law.
LPOSD is among a minority of districts in Idaho that don’t have continuous facilities levies. Instead, LPOSD has asked more sporadically for facilities funding only when absolutely needed. And the need is now. Five of 11 schools are in unsatisfactory physical condition and the majority of their systems (roof, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, etc.) are recommended for replacement. The three schools to be replaced with this levy were all built in the 1950s, but all schools will get needed upgrades. A good summary source of information is at www.voteourschools.org. Make sure you know the facts and how important your vote is.
Local schools can and should be a source of community pride. We have one chance to educate a child. The message our children should hear is that we value education and that we are willing to pay for their future no matter what they dream for themselves. It is our responsibility and our generational privilege to make a difference now. Take pride in voting yes for the LPOSD facilities levy on Aug. 30.
