Four Bulldogs advance to semis at state wrestling

POCATELLO — It was a strong opening day for the Bulldogs at the 4A state wrestling tournament on Friday at Holt Arena on the Idaho State campus, with four wrestlers going 2-0 to advance into today semis. The Bulldogs are in fifth place in the team standings after day one, with the potential for a lot more points with 10 wrestlers still going today. 

Mahonri Hunsaker (152), Tyler Presser (160), Casey Randles (182) and Jake Williams (285) all notched solid wins to remain alive in the championship draw.

Hunsaker narrowly advanced in his first round match, beating Bishop Kelly 4-3 in a low-scoring defensive battle. No. 1 seeds Presser and Randles handled their business, and are each now two wins away from a state tile.

Jake Williams, the No. 3 seed at 285, won 6-4 in the quarters over Jerome in another match that could have gone either way. Like Presser and Hunsaker, he’s seeking his first title, while Randles is gunning for his second.

Tanner Kohal (145), Hyrum Hunsaker (145), Elijah Guthrie (160), Owen Stebbins (170), Cal Wilcox (195) and Zach Alamillo all went 2-1 on the day, and remain alive in the consolation rounds.
