Radon levels high in Idaho

SANDPOINT — About 31 percent of homes in Bonner County are at high levels of radon, a radioactive gas that occurs naturally and cannot be seen, smelled or tasted in the homes.

Radon levels are high across Idaho state after a study showed about 40 percent of all the homes tested are at unsafe levels of the gas. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer behind smoking.

In Bonner County, 478 homes were tested and 31.2 percent tested at high levels. In Boundary County, 81 homes were tested and 15 percent showed high levels.
