SANDPOINT — Businesses in Sandpoint are receiving a retailer’s guide to the 1 percent local sales tax, passed in November to fund the grandstands at War Memorial Field. The first collections of the tax will start Feb. 20.

“Voters chose that option at the election overwhelmingly in November, 73 percent,” City Administrator Jennifer Stapleton said. “So now we are into implementation for the retailers. It’s not an option if you have to pay it or not.”

Stapleton said she overheard many phone calls about the collection of the sales tax in her first week in the office. Questions ranged from whether the tax is optional to how do businesses pay the city the tax. She wanted to show residents that the city can be proactive and get information out to the businesses and the public.
