Pedestrians are struck by truck; 1 killed

PONDERAY — Two women were struck as they walked along McGhee Road by a southbound pickup truck. One died at the scene and the other was airlifted to a Spokane hospital with severe injuries.

Idaho State Police said Katherine K. Stelzer, 61, of Mead, Wash., and Zualita L. Updike, 50, of Clark Fork, were walking south in the 400 block of McGhee Road when they were struck by a 2003 Chevy Silverado pickup driven by Peter F. Goullette, 22, of Sandpoint, who was also traveling south on the road.

Stelzer was pronounced deceased at the scene and Updike was airlifted to Sacred Heart Medical Center. Her condition was initially listed as critical but stable.

McGhee Road was blocked for five hours.

Assisting at the crash were Bonner County Sheriff’s Office and Ponderay Police.
