Meet the neighbors at today's contra dance

| July 8, 2016 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — They will soon be lining up at the Sandpoint Community Hall to take part in the monthly contra dance, coming up this Friday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The event takes place the second Friday of every month except August.

Contra dancing is a folk tradition where couples line up side-by-side in a line stretching the length of the room. A caller gives instructions as dancers move forward and back, changing partners while dancing to live music. However, according to the Sandpoint Parks and Rec department, sponsor of the event, no previous experience is required.

Emily Faulkner will officiate at the dance and sponsorship from Lost Horse Press helps keep the monthly events afloat. A $5 donation from attendees will go toward paying the musicians.

Instruction for newbies begins at 7 p.m. Organizers suggest wearing comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement and non-marking shoes. They ask dancers to bring a finger-food snack to share with others at break time. A personal water bottle will also come in handy.
