From bugs to dancing, Parks & Rec classes have it all

| July 15, 2016 1:00 AM

What do performing, bus and the tango have in common? They are all the subject of upcoming classes hosted by Sandpoint Parks & Recreation.

Show Camp, which will be held Aug. 1-5 at Lakeview Park in Sandpoint, is being offered to youth between 7 and 14 years old. The camp is under the direction of Darla Dreyer, who is a former Disney choreographer/director.

Camp participants will work on acting, dancing, comedy routines and skits, an opening production number and song presentation. Camp will end with a performance for family and friends.

Participants should bring a sack lunch, water bottle, and wear comfortable shoes. The class will take place from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. each day.

The cost is $95, with a $5 discount for city residents. Scholarships are available.

Those interested must register by July 25 at Sandpoint Parks and Recreation, 1123 Lake St., Sandpoint.

If performing isn’t your thing, the city has a class teaching all about bugs, running July 25-29.

If you’ve ever wondered how an insect so small can lift so much or fly so far or how a butterfly knows where to migrate, having never been there before, and why does every other generation lives twice as long as the previous, this class is for curious youngsters between the ages of 8-14.

Participants will explore the world of bugs, their utility, uniqueness, and ingenuity. Ants that farm and a bug that tolerates extremes of every sort; there is so much to explore.

The class will run daily from 1-5 p.m. and the cost is $85, with a $5 discount for city residents. Participants are reminded to wear clothes that are easy to move in and to bring plenty of food/water to fuel and active body and mind.

Register by July 18 at Sandpoint Parks and Recreation, 1123 Lake St.

And if dancing is more your thing, then Sandpoint Parks and Rec has the answer with an evening out for tango dancers.

The general public is invited to meet at Sandpoint Community Hall, 204 N. First Ave., on Saturday, July 16, from 8-10 p.m. No partner is needed, and previous dancing experience is not necessary. Beginners are encouraged to attend a 30-minute introductory lesson which begins at 7:30 p.m. Participants are asked to wear non-marking shoes.

There is no need to preregister for this social dance and there is a $5 entry fee at the door. The event also will be offered on Aug. 20, Sept. 17, and Oct. 15.
