I want to thank the Daily Bee for covering the story of a recent special meeting of the East Bonner County Library District Board where the Sandpoint Library remodel and expansion project was discussed.
The story that ran on Thursday, June 30, accurately described many aspects of the project including the tentative design concepts and the source of existing funds. Inadvertently, the reporter implies that East Bonner County Library District has already secured all of the funding necessary to complete the project. This is not the case. While a design has not been finalized, estimated cost of the project is $3 million to $3.5 million. The article accurately states that approximately $2.5 million is earmarked for the remodel/expansion. As we originally stated back in April, we plan to sell the two buildings on the adjoining lot to make way for more parking and to help fund this project. This has not changed. We hope that existing funds will position us to qualify for matching grants and we are organizing fundraising initiatives.
The article also mistakenly reported an additional 20,000 square foot expansion to the existing 30,000-square-foot building. Actually, we will add approximately 10,000 square feet. We also need to expand our fire suppression system.
The library remodel and expansion project is an opportunity for you to shape the library into what you need, not through another tax levy, but through individual voluntary contributions, local corporate sponsorships and public input. We are scheduling community outreach presentations to gather input, share the exciting details on the project and answer your questions. If your organization would like to host a conversation about the project or if you are an individual with questions, email marcy@ebonnerlibrary.org.
