On Aug. 30, there will be an election. This will be a very important local vote which will affect each taxpayer personally.

The Lake Pend Oreille School District will have a $55 million plant levy as the only question on the ballot. You may have already heard that this is a plan to rebuild three school buildings, add four classrooms to Sandpoint High School, upgrades to Clark Fork CTE shop, five athletic fields, and many projects for all of the remaining buildings in the district.

Scheduled during the summer is reasoned away by LPOSD claiming any delay would set its timetable back a year. However, summertime has many challenges for voters who are vacationing or recreating. It will be the only item on the ballot, costing in the neighborhood of $30,000 to run.

If you are not registered to vote — register now or on the day of the election. If you will not be available to vote on Aug. 30, you can vote early at the Election Office or request an absentee ballot.

Educate yourself on this levy. Do not rely solely on information provided by the school district as it will be filtered. It is to their benefit to put the best spin on the facts.

Silence through not voting is consent to doubling your school property tax for the next six years.
